Nye County is desert throughout, and fine wind-blown dust is the constant. Gravel and unpaved approaches at the smaller communities put considerably more grit at the door than a paved commercial center does, so entrance matting earns its keep here more than most places.
Elevation varies enormously across the county - Pahrump sits low and hot, Tonopah is over six thousand feet and genuinely cold in winter. Snow and freezing nights are a real consideration at Tonopah and in the county's northern reaches; they are not at Pahrump or Amargosa Valley. Humidity is low across the county, so drying is usually fast in a heated building.
